School Building Committee
A committee was created by the Selectboard to evaluate whether the town should accept the Albion Elementary building. A special town meeting was held to approve the purchase and to raise funds to maintain the school until the spring of 2026, while the building is assessed. The town purchased the school for $1 on 9/10/2025. The building had various inspections before we accepted the school to identify any major problems. We are currently working through the uncovered issues with the building, including the state of the steam boiler, septic system, and well, in addition working to determine what improvements are needed to bring the building up to code after the change of use. Currently it may not be up to code depending on the type of occupancy, so we are unable to let the community use the building at this time. In addition to the maintenance work, the committee is assessing potential uses for the building and sources of grant funding. If it is determined that the town cannot afford the building, the building may be disposed of in a manner that most benefits the town (for example, demolition or sale for a use that will benefit the town). The committee makes recommendations to the Selectboard for consideration.
The Committee meets the first and third Wednesday of the month in the elementary school at 6:00 pm at 20 School Street, Albion ME. All meetings are open to the public.
